A light tank, designed in 1932, and produced in Germany from 1934, originally intended as a training tank. Lacking better tanks in 1936 it saw extensive combat in the ‘KondorLegion’ in the Spanish Civil War, and was still a staple in the Polish Campaign in 1939, France 1940 and Barbarossa in 1941.
It was clear that by the end of 1941 the Panzer I was not suitable for front line combat and the remaining tanks were withdrawn and used in their intended role, as training tanks. Over 2000 were produced.
