This was the largest halftrack of the German Army’s ‘prime movers’ in World war 2. It was developed as a recovery tractor and most in this role had a 6 ton crane fitted on the rear flatbed. On entering service in 1939 it could tow any tank in the German inventory, but as the war progressed and tanks and other armoured vehicles became heavier, often two or three, in tandem, would be required to recover vehicles. Three, linked together, were required to tow one Tiger I or II, for example.
