The BT7 was designated as a ‘cavalry tank’ and was produced from 1935 to 1940. It was the successor to several marks of BTs and was about the fastest tank of its time, with a good main gun, the 45mm, which was the equal or superior to of any other of its day. Lightly armoured it depended on its speed for survival, and that hope was comprehensively undone by the Germans in 1941, when 2000 were lost. The survivors continued to be fielded within the Russian army facing the Germans up to 2943, and many captured examples were used by the Germans. It was still being used by the Russians against the Japanese in 1945!
