The Char D2, its design roots starting in 1930 was effectively another French Infantry Tank, but its design was an improvement on some of the other designs, and being armed with a 47mm main gun it was on a par with the best of the German tanks then coming into production.
In fact the tank was considered to be an excellent AFV, and in 1937 it was issued to the 507tyh Tank Battalion, considered the best of the French Army. Unfortunately by 1940 the tanks were considered to be 'tired' and with only around 100 produced many were cannibalised to keep the rest in action, further decreasing active numbers, and poor tactical deployments from 10th May further reduced the numbers, though those that did fight performed well, and indeed discomforted the German Grossdeutschland Regiment.
