Designed as the replacement for the Panzer III and Panzer IV in light of the modern Russian tanks, especially the T34, which were faced, and discovered to be superior to the Panzer III and IV in 1941.
But the tank was provisionally designed before World War 2, and in light of the 1941 shocks, was rushed into production, making its debut at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, though teething troubles rather overwhelmed any success. Nearly 3000 of the ‘G’ model were produced, the most prolific design, and with the 75mm L70 main gun and excellent sloped armour it was more than a match for the T34, and was a fearsome opponent on both the eastern and western fronts.
