Design work on this armoured car was begun in 1931 but it was not until 1934 that production began, over 1300 eventually being produced before France fell in 1940. As a long range reconnaissance armoured car this vehicle was an excellent design, and having a two man turret meant that the 25mm main gun, similar to that of the standard French anti tank gun was effective. A co-ax MG made this a useful combination in combat against lightly armed and armoured opposition.

So good was this vehicle that large numbers of captured ones were adopted by the Germans, and saw service both in the east and west up to the end of the war.
