FCM36 was a light/medium tank was designed in 1934 to be both relatively inexpensive to produce, and provide the support needed for infantry attacks. The result was a tank with an excruciatingly slow top speed, a main gun (37mmL21 which by 1940 was of little value) but effective armour.
Production began in 1938 but by the start of the German attack in May of 1940 only 100 had been delivered.
Though not covering itself i glory in the French Army, the chassis gained a second life as the Marder MkI tank destroyer, as well as several vehicles designed specifically for the German 21st Panzer Division.
