The Hawker Typhoon was supposed to be the British Fighter to take on the German Me190... but it soon became clear that this was not its future. In fact it was ideal as a ground attack aircraft, so design moved in that direction. Entering service in its new role in 1942 it soon proved itself perfect, its rugged design and capability of absorbing damage making it a hit with pilots.
With D Day the Typhoon really came into its own, 'cab ranks' o aircraft being called own on German targets from Normandy to Northern Germany. Armed worth rockets, it was an effective morale breaker whether damage was caused or not! Over 3300 were produced by 1945.
