Developed in Germany in the 1930s the Panzer III operated within the German tank forces throughout the war. The Panzer IIIF was armed with a 50mmL42 gun, an improvement on earlier models which were armed with 37mm guns. This was the first ‘mass production’ model of the Panzer III and provided the backbone of the German armoured forces during the invasion of Russia in 1941. Over 500 were produced before the next mark was introduced.
