The CSS Virginia was a Confederate casemate ironclad. On March 8th 1862 she fought and destroyed several union wooden ships in Hampton Roads. The following day she found herself up against the Union turreted Ironclad USS Monitor. They then fought the first battle between ironclad warships with an inconclusive result. CSS Virginia was eventually scuttled by the Confederacy because her draught was too great to escape from advancing Union forces.
