When the Germans introduced the Tiger I and Panther in 1942 it was clear that Russia was going to need a better heavy tank and so the IS2 was designed. With good and thick sloping armour, it was armed with a massive 122mm gun, adapted from a naval weapon. Unfortunately the ammunition was in two parts, which really slowed down loading. Later models resolved this issue, but loading was still over 30 seconds. Production started late in 1943. Over 2500 were produced.
