With over 36000 built this was one of the top ground attack aircraft of World War 2. Entering service in 1941it served in the Russian air force throughout the War. Known as the 'Flying Tank' it was both heavily armoured and armed, but as a result if it had a weakness it was that its payload was limited by the extra weight. It certainly struck terror into the German infantry and deserved its reputation.
