Both Zudapp and BMW provided the motorcycles for the reconnaissance motorcycles within the German army in World War 2. Between the two firms over 40000 were produced, some minor production continuing after 1945.
Certainly in the first half of World War 2 the motorcycle combination played a major role within the German Army, the MG34 and later MG42 being the weapon operated by the occupant of the sidecar.
