The Russian T34/85 was the up-gunned version of the T34/76, which was a revolution in tank design and a rude shock for the Germans when they invaded Russia in 1941. But by 1943 it was becoming clear that new German tank designs were superior to the T34/76, so a new turret with an 85mm gun was designed, production beginning in January 1944. Over 22500 of these tanks were produced by the end of World War 2 and production continued, the tank appearing in combat up to the early 21st Century in several parts of the world.
