Built on the chassis of the T34 the SU85 was designed as a tank destroyer. Its main armament was the 85mm DT5 gun to counter the appearance of the German Tiger I tank, and later the Panther. Production started in mid 1943, and continued until late 1944 when the T34/85 came into production in large numbers. A total of 2660 SU85s were produced.
