This Russian armoured personnel Carrier entered service in 1954 and continued to be produced until 1972 and was amphibious which was a novelty for the time. It was a popular vehicle not only within the Warsaw Pact but also In the Vietnam conflict and several wars in the Middle East, being able to carry up to 20 infantry in relative 'comfort' and safety.
Withdrawn from Russian service withnthe introduction of the BMP series, some have been returned to active service in the Ukraine in the 2020s, and were also active in the Syrian Civil War. It is believed that over 15000 were produced.
