Development of the Churchill Bridgelayer started in 1942, based on experience gained from earlier Covenanter and Valentine Bridgelayers. SBG stood for ‘Small Box Girder’ and this was used for bridging small streams and rivers. This version had the fully functioning turret with a 290mm Spigot mortar, designed for ‘bunker busting’. The spigot mortar bomb, weighing 40 pounds, had a range of 70 metres
