Designed in 1942, the M21 served in Europe from 1944 to 1945 and a platoon was to be found in every US tank and armoured infantry as well as in several armoured divisions. Armed with an 81mm mortar, the crew had considerable protection and mobility, and often almost instant support could be provided for front line units. A total of 110 were built.
